Wisey's Words: Blues Blog
While most of you will be tucking into some festive treats, enjoying some mulled wine or wondering when it’s appropriate to tell the in-laws you didn’t like their present – Pompey boss Tony Adams will be busily trying to work out how to get some Christmas points on the board.
Up to Christmas Day, his side’s last win would have been last month’s victory over Blackburn Rovers.
West Ham United and Arsenal to come between now and the end of 2008.
Now, it’s well documented that the club is up for sale and perhaps things on the field haven’t been going as well as the manager, players and supporters would have liked.
However, Sol Campbell’s comments to the media recently don’t help the situation in the slightest.
If you missed what he said, it was along the lines of ‘When the Club sort out what’s going on in the boardroom, we’ll sort out our performances on the field.’
Now I don’t think that is the correct thing for the club captain to be publicly expressing. He may well feel like that on the inside but you don’t need to let the world and his wife know of your issues.
As skipper, he should be telling the press that the players don’t get affected by it and they’ll just get on with doing their jobs.
All his remarks achieve are stoking up a fire and giving the National press yet further ammunition to have a pop at Pompey.
A quiet word in Sol’s ear from somebody inside the club wouldn’t go a miss.....
I saw Lauren’s comments in the Spanish press the other week as well. He reeled off the apparent ‘next destination' of some of his team-mates suggesting the likes of Jermain Defoe is going to Spurs, Johnson to Liverpool etc etc
Looks to me as if he’s simply regurgitated what he’s been reading in the papers here and has given it to those doing a similar job in Spain.
As someone said to me the other day, the players tend to be the last one's to find out about somebody leaving the club.
But yet again, unhelpful or what?
It is a big festive period for Pompey and Adams – he’ll be well aware of that. I just hope the pressure that is beginning to build from some supporters for him to leave is stemmed slightly so he can at least be given a fair crack at getting things right.
Have a great Christmas and New Year and let’s hope we pick up the points we need in the league while also begin our FA Cup defence in positive fashion.
